What is ETF?

ETF stands for Exchange-Traded Funds. An ETF is an open-ended fund that can be traded like a share on a stock exchange. An index-tracking ETF investment aims to track the performance of the underlying index or asset by holding a portfolio of the constituent stocks or derivatives (likes equity-link-swaps) of that index or asset. Investors can simply purchase ETFs like listed stocks by having a securities account with an authorised stockbroker. Most ETFs are traded in board lots and the minimum investment amount is affordable to most individual investors.

The first ETF in Hong Kong, the Tracker Fund (2800), was launched on November 1999 as the mean by the Hong Kong government to dispose a substantial portfolio of shares, which it purchased during a market operation in 1998. Up to the date, there are various types of ETF listed in the Hong Kong Stock Exchange with underlying assets like Hong Kong stocks, overseas stocks, commodities and bonds etc.
